Huawei HCIP-Datacom-Core Technology (H12-821) Study Guide
Prepare for H12-821 with OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, switching, multicast, security, and network reliability topics.
HCIP-Datacom-Core Technology is Huawei’s professional-level core data communications exam. H12-821 covers network technologies used across scenarios. Compared with HCIA, it places more emphasis on protocol behavior, routing policy, reliability, and analyzing complex network problems.
Huawei recommends learning HCIA-Datacom first. This guide summarizes the main study areas; use the Huawei Career Certification page to find the official outline matching your exam version.
Topic areas
| Area | Focus |
|---|---|
| OSPF, IS-IS, BGP | Adjacencies, route calculation, attributes, policy |
| Routing and traffic control | Redistribution, filtering, path selection, traffic engineering basics |
| Ethernet switching and multicast | VLANs, spanning tree, aggregation, multicast forwarding |
| IPv6 and network services | Address planning, protocol support, common services |
| Security and reliability | Access control, redundancy, fast convergence, fault isolation |
| WLAN, management, and solutions | Wireless basics, network management, typical designs |
The older official V1.0 outline assigned substantial weight to BGP, OSPF, routing control, and network security. If the current version has changed, use its weights rather than carrying over old figures.
What to focus on
For each routing protocol, organize your notes around how neighbors form, routes are created, paths are selected, and advertisements are controlled. Use topologies to practice OSPF areas, IS-IS levels, BGP attributes and policies, and how switching, multicast, and reliability affect forwarding.
Common confusion: BGP path selection depends on attribute preference, policy, and route propagation scope. Memorizing an attribute order is not enough for scenario questions. Draw the route source, policy location, and selected next hop.
Study plan and readiness check
Review IP, VLANs, and basic routing first, then study OSPF, IS-IS, and BGP, and finish with integrated troubleshooting. After configuring a topology, inspect neighbor states, routing tables, and forwarding behavior; use counterexamples to verify policy boundaries.
- Explain when and how OSPF, IS-IS, and BGP operate.
- Analyze how attributes, filters, and redistribution affect paths.
- Troubleshoot adjacency, missing routes, loops, and convergence.
- Analyze switching, multicast, security, and redundancy together.
Keep practicing
Start from a topology and routing table, then explain control-plane choices and forwarding results. Start H12-821 practice.
