Google Cloud Professional Cloud Network Engineer (PCNE) Study Guide

Prepare for GCP-PCNE with VPCs, managed network services, hybrid connectivity, operations, troubleshooting, and security.

The Professional Cloud Network Engineer (PCNE) exam is for engineers who design, implement, and operate Google Cloud network infrastructure. It goes beyond product definitions: you need to reason about how routing, firewall, load balancing, and hybrid connectivity affect end-to-end traffic.

GCP-PCNE is the shorthand used on this site; the official name is Professional Cloud Network Engineer. Review the official certification page and exam guide for current objectives.

Exam domains

The official outline covers network design and planning, VPC implementation, managed network services, hybrid interconnectivity, operations and troubleshooting, and network security. Check the current official guide for domain weights.

VPCs and routing

Review subnets, Shared VPC, VPC Peering, Private Google Access, firewall rules and policies. Understand static/dynamic routes, Cloud Router and BGP, global/regional dynamic routing, and Network Connectivity Center topologies.

Managed services and hybrid connectivity

Know load balancer types, health checks, Cloud Armor, Cloud CDN, Cloud DNS, and Cloud NAT. For hybrid links, compare HA VPN, Dedicated/Partner Interconnect, Cloud Router, and cross-cloud connectivity by use case, bandwidth, and redundancy.

Operations and security

Practice troubleshooting with VPC Flow Logs, firewall logging, Connectivity Tests, Network Intelligence Center, and metrics. Security topics include Cloud NGFW, firewall policies, DDoS/WAF protection, VPC Service Controls, and Secure Web Proxy.

Common confusion: VPC Peering is not transitive routing. HA VPN and Interconnect also differ in bandwidth, cost, and SLA. For connectivity questions, draw the path and inspect routes, priorities, firewall rules, and return traffic.

Study sequence and readiness check

Start with VPC addressing and routes, then lab VPN/Interconnect and load balancing, and finish with logs, diagnostics, and security policies. Explain each hop’s route and filtering behavior on a traffic-path diagram.

  • Analyze how subnets, route priority, BGP, and firewalls affect connectivity.
  • Choose hybrid connectivity based on bandwidth, redundancy, latency, and cost.
  • Select load balancing, NAT, DNS, and protection services for a workload.
  • Use logs and Network Intelligence Center to investigate failures.

Keep practicing

Use a network topology and failure symptoms to trace routing or policy issues hop by hop. Start GCP-PCNE practice.
