Google Cloud Cloud Digital Leader (CDL) Study Guide: Core Concepts and Plan
A GCP-CDL study guide to digital transformation, data, AI, infrastructure modernization, security, and cloud operations.
Cloud Digital Leader (CDL) is Google Cloud’s foundational certification. It tests whether you can explain how cloud technology supports business goals and what Google Cloud products broadly do. It focuses on concepts and business scenarios rather than configuring resources like an engineer exam.
This guide summarizes the domains, common distinctions, and a practical study approach. GCP-CDL is the shorthand used on this site; the official certification name is Cloud Digital Leader. Use the official certification page and exam guide as the source of truth.
Who is it for?
It suits product, business, sales, project, and management roles, as well as beginners who want a broad view of Google Cloud. There are no technical prerequisites. If you want to deploy and operate resources, continue with the Associate Cloud Engineer guide.
Exam domains and weights
| Domain | Main topics | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Digital Transformation with Google Cloud | Cloud value, deployment models, shared responsibility | ~17% |
| Exploring Data Transformation | Data value, storage, analytics, and pipelines | ~16% |
| Innovating with Google Cloud AI | AI/ML fundamentals and Google Cloud AI products | ~16% |
| Modernize Infrastructure and Applications | Migration, compute, containers, serverless, APIs, hybrid cloud | ~17% |
| Trust and Security with Google Cloud | Security, compliance, identity, trusted infrastructure | ~17% |
| Scaling with Google Cloud Operations | Cost governance, reliability, operations, sustainability | ~17% |
What to understand
Cloud and business transformation
Understand how elasticity, scalability, agility, and total cost of ownership affect business decisions. Distinguish on-premises, public, private, hybrid, and multi-cloud models. Know IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, and the shared responsibility model.
Common confusion: Moving to cloud does not remove customer security responsibilities. The provider/customer split changes across service models, so answer based on required control and operational effort.
Data and AI
Distinguish databases, data warehouses, and data lakes. Learn common uses for BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Cloud SQL, Spanner, Bigtable, and Firestore. For AI, compare pre-trained APIs, AutoML, and custom models, and understand data quality and responsible AI.
Infrastructure, security, and operations
Know the business value of VMs, containers, Kubernetes, serverless, migration paths, and API management. For security, understand authentication, authorization, encryption, compliance, and shared responsibility. For operations, learn budgets, quotas, reliability, disaster recovery, and support options.
Study sequence and readiness check
Start with cloud fundamentals and business terms. Then map each domain as “need → product → business value.” Finish with scenario questions that ask you to explain why a solution fits, rather than recall product names alone.
- Explain IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, and their responsibility boundaries.
- Choose broadly between databases, warehouses, object storage, and analytics services.
- Compare pre-trained AI APIs, AutoML, and custom models.
- Explain the business value of migration, serverless, containers, IAM, cost governance, and reliability.
Keep practicing
